If you have no clue what the migration is all about the here are a few facts, The migration is the movement of vast numbers of the Serengeti's wildebeest, accompanied by large numbers of zebra, and smaller numbers of Grant's gazelle, Thompson's gazelle, eland and impala. These move in an annual pattern which is fairly predictable. They migrating throughout the year, constantly seeking fresh grazing and, it's now thought, better quality water. The precise timing of the Serengeti wildebeest migration is entirely dependent upon the rainfall patterns each year.
This migration made the Masai Mara be declared the Seventh wonder of the world! Now we face the looming truth that this wonder of the world, may become extinct having that the Tanzanian President Jakwaya Kikwete has approved a long presiding debate of constructing a highway through the Serengeti National park. This move will undoubtedly interfere with natural wonder that has captured and fascinated people from all over the world, leading masses of people into the Kenyan owned National park, come see and witness the seventh world wonder.
Politics.....
Is this move politically inclined? Poor infrastructure, employment, power and land conflicts are top on the list of the Ngorongoro constituency people. In 2005, the now president is reportedly have used the highway construction as a political gambit, promising better infrastructure which would make the lives of these people better considering location and distance logistics to the Kenya / Tanzania border as compared to Arusha.
Five years later, elections are round the corner and the politicians need to justify their stay in the political House. How in God's name will they do this if they have not proved to the people who will vote for them that indeed they honored their promises?
The word as it is....
August 1st 2010, we woke up to the news that the Tanzanian President had signed and agreed to the construction of the highway. The alarming shock of this is that tourism sector is one of the biggest industry ranked in Kenya.A majority of the people depend on this wildebeest migration period to earn a living!to feed families! There are more than 50 Lodges & Camps in the Masai Mara, what happens if the animals stop the crossing? Does this mean the number of jobless people in Kenya is just about to rise? Does it mean that the migration is now a thing of the past? Does it mean that we are about to bring down a number of trees yet we are still complaining of Global Warming? Does this mean that the seventh wonder of the world is just about to become among the ancient wonders of the world?Does it mean, for the sake of political pressure and political gain, we all suffer the consequences?
Actions speak louder than words.....
In a move to stop this selfish cruelty, please join in the petition in hope of stopping the highway by http://www.savetheserengeti.org/issues/stop-the-serengeti-highway or please tweet, facebook, email or share this article.....
Many Thanks!
We all can make a difference, the power of mass can move a mountain.....
